Fair Work Tools

Fair work is work that offers effective voice, opportunity, security, fulfilment and respect, generating benefits for individuals, organisations and society

The Fair Work Convention have developed tools and resources to support workers, employers and trade unions assess and improve fair work practices.

Guidance on Using the Fair Work Tools

The Fair Work Convention recommends using the Fair Work Employer Support Tool (managed by Scottish Enterprise) and the Fair Work Self-Assessment Tool for Workers together. Combining employer perspectives, worker experiences and workforce data can help organisations identify meaningful actions and drive continuous progress in fair work.

The guidance explains:

  • The purpose of each tool;
  • how the tools complement one another;
  • gives a five-step approach to assessment, analysis, action planning and review and;
  • explains how workforce data can support a deeper understanding of fair work outcomes.

Fair Work Employer Support Tool

The Fair Work Employer Support Tool (managed by Scottish Enterprise) helps employers assess how well fair work practices are embedded within their organisation’s policies and workplace practices. The tool aims to:

  • focus on employer’s perceptions of how they have embedded fair work in policy and practice;
  • help employers understand and fully embed the dimensions of fair work and;
  • supports employers to take the next step on their fair work journey.

Fair Work Self-Assessment Tool for Workers

The Self-Assessment Tool for Workers can be used by:

  • workers individually;
  • workers as a group;
  • employers and
  • unions

The Fair Work Self-Assessment Tool for Workers aims to:

  • allow workers to assess how fair they think their workplace is, against the five dimensions of fair work;
  • allow employers and trade unions to understand workers’ collective experiences and perceptions of fair work and;
  • help workers, employers and trade unions assess and improve fair work practices at an organisational level.

The tool complements the employer tool, helping employers explore differences between policy intent and what is experienced in practice by their workforce. We recommend that employers use both tools together.

Fair Work Data Tool

The Fair Work Data Tool allows users to explore data and insights relating to fair work, supporting evidence based decision-making and giving access to data that tracks Scotland’s progress against the five dimensions of fair work.
