Fair Work Tools – Guidance

The Fair Work Convention Fair Work Self-Assessment Tool for Workers aims to:

  • allow workers to assess how fair they think their workplace is, against the five dimensions of fair work
  • allow employers and trade unions to understand workers’ collective experiences and perceptions of fair work
  • help workers, employers and trade unions assess and improve fair work practices at an organisational level

The Fair Work Employer Support Tool (managed by Scottish Enterprise) aims to:

  • help employers understand and fully embed the dimensions of fair work
  • support employers to take the next step on their Fair Work journey

 Each tool has different uses:

  • the Employer Support Tool focuses on employer’s perceptions of how they have embedded fair work in policy and practice;
  • the Self-Assessment Tool for Workers looks at how fair work is experienced and perceived in practice by workers

We recommend that employers use both tools together by following the steps set out in the diagram below.

Step 1

Fair Work Employer Support Tool

  • to assess and benchmark employer workplace practices against fair work dimensions

Step 2

Fair Work Self-Assessment Tool for Workers

  • to understand workers’ perceptions and experiences of fair work

Step 3

People Analytics

  • to complement worker and employer perspectives, people data is gathered to support detailed analysis.
  • to support Step 3 above, we have developed a people analytics resource which provides suggested monitoring data for employers to gather to understand their workforce in more detail.

Step 4

Action Planning

  • output from steps 1-3 should inform action planning

Action planning should:

  • be undertaken with trade unions or workforce representatives.
  • identify tangible actions to advance fair work.
  • identify an appropriate review point.

Step 5

Review

  • review should consider how well actions are working
  • begin again at Step 1 and consider how your results have progressed. Fair work is about continuous progress
